I wondered if anyone knew if development continues on the velbus system? I am asking because the forum seems to have had no activity for a month or so.
We would like to become distributors of Velbus in the UK and are continuing evaluating home automation technlogies. At the moment we are about to embark upon a ‘demonstration’ smart-home. We have looked at insteon, UPB and zwave, and stumbled upon velbus a few days ago.
I personally have used velleman kit before and am quite fond of the company and its products. However, we do not want to incorporate technologies into a £100,000+ project if its is going nowhere.
I have yet to look at software for velbus, but I gather it is entirely windows based. Part of the project objectives include an open-source software policy. Does anyone think I could have engineers and programmers fully utilise the velbus system without proprietary software?
I’m the lead programmer on the Velbus software and I can tell you that it can be used/distributed/copied freely like all other software developed by Velleman. The protocol for each module is also available for download.
You should be able to perform every function on each module by using the switches on the module itself. The software is just an easier way of operating/configuring your Velbus modules.
Development is certainly continuing on the Velbus system. I know R&D is still working hard, developing new modules and upgrading existing ones. I’m quite sure we’ve only scratched the surface with the modules available today. The software is also regularly updated with new features and improvements.
Personally, I think the Velbus is an exciting project with lots of potential.
