I’m somewhat skeptical of accuracy of wind speed or rain measurements if the station is mounted on anything but a pole with no obstructions in any direction. Wall mounting would definitely reduce the measured wind in certain directions, for example, and if it is windy during rain – it might underestimate the amount of rain too.
A naive solution would be to install a temperature measurement device on the north-facing wall (provided you’re based in the northern hemisphere) as a separate device and ignore whatever VMBMETEO ends up measuring in terms of temperature. VMBPIRO, for example, can serve as a temperature sensor as well.
I also had considered VMBMETEO, but in the end ended up with two VMBPIROs for temperature, light and motion sensing, an AirGradient for air quality measurements and a generic hall effect rain gauge for my rain sensing needs (I have no need for a wind sensor.) Combining this all together into an useful system requires some DIY though and any integration goes through outside Velbus, so that’s the downside…
(EDIT: “real” meteorological stations use a sun shield that usually looks like this:
)
Don’t forget that you can always pull sensor data into Velbus by using the VMB4AN or (soon) the VMB8IN (and more options to follow, depending on potential sales)
Thank you!!! VMBPIROs will be my main outdoor temperature sensor - somehow I did not think about it The VMBMETEO will be mounted on the roof, on a short antenna mast, on the corner of the building.
Hi there,
Is the VMBMeteo still available, no hits when I look for it on the Velbus site !?!
To fully automate screen according to sunshine, wind & rain that looks the correct sensor to me, right?
On the other hand, light illuminance not being the same as solar irradiance, did any of you ever used this sensor to fully automate screens?
Up when it’s raining or windy should be piece of cake, but
Down on sunny days ?
Apologies for the late response—our product manager had to approve the “leak” of this sneak preview before we could share the details!
The VMBMeteo is no longer available for sale. We do have some remaining stock, but these units are reserved exclusively for replacing existing installations. If you need a replacement, you can request one through our helpdesk ticket system. We are in the process of introducing a new weather station that offers significant improvements. It will include:
Light intensity: 0–150 kLux
Twilight indicator: 0–1 kLux
Temperature: -30 to 60°C
Wind speed: 0–35 m/s
Rain detection: No rain / Rain
Rain intensity indicator: Light rain / Heavy rain
The new design features a mushroom-style enclosure with no moving parts, greatly enhancing reliability and durability. Like other Velbus products, it will be covered by our 10-year warranty.
One major difference is that the new model no longer communicates via Velbus CANbus. Instead, it uses Modbus RTU and requires 24V power. To integrate it with a Velbus system, you’ll need one of our new IoT gateways with a Modbus RTU interface (such as the VMBSIG-21, coming soon). For new installations, we recommend running a 6-core wire between the sensor location and your electrical cabinet.
Given the enhanced capabilities, the new meteo station will retail for €1200. If you’re looking for a more budget-friendly option to protect your blinds from strong winds, we will also be offering a simple 0-10V wind sensor that can be connected to a VMB4AN module.
We plan to start selling the new meteo station in Q2 of this year.
